Warwick students are this term to take part in an outreach programme to children in disadvantaged schools.
As part of the graduate teaching scheme Teach First, Warwick students will be visiting local schools to run workshops. These will include discussions about life as a student and what they think about university, encouraging the children to think about higher education.
SU Education Officer Sean Ruston is keen for more students to get involved in the scheme. “With the cuts to Aimhigher and the anticipated rise in tuition fees, there is a great demand for this kind of thing, and with Inspire’s expansion we hope to find a greater role for the SU in widening participation in higher education from children in the schools near to Warwick.”
Extra funds mean that visits can be made to schools in Leamington and Coventry for the first time.
The SU encouraged widening participation in their submission to the University’s Strategy Review: “We believe that our students would be proud to have Warwick as the leading institution in ensuring that access to higher education is fair, and dependent on a students academic ability rather than their background.”
